Photography and Kids

October 8th, 2007

Having a camera is essential especially if you have kids around. You would want to take their picture all the time because they tend to grow up quickly. Parents want to have countless memories of school photos, holiday shots and birthday pics. Some parents often have difficulties because they feel they lack skills as a photographer.

Taking photographs of children comes with challenges but also can be very rewarding. Capturing their joyful moments can be satisfying and you can definitely cherish them forever. Here are some tips so you can improve and create perfect shots with kids.

Tip # 1

Make your camera part of your usual affair. The more children get accustomed to cameras the more it will be easier for you to take a perfect shot with out them making faces or clowning around.

Tip # 2

If you are taking photos of kids, try to bend on one knee or sit down so that you can get into your kid’s level.

Tip # 3

Remember that little kids have at least two or three minutes of patience until they get bored. Don’t force them to stay in one place for a long time. Make sure that you have extra batteries and memory card just in case it runs out. It will help if you will add props or toys.

Tip # 4

Focus the shots on your kid’s face because big backgrounds can be distracting. It definitely creates a lot of drama and interest when using zoom button.

Tip # 5

Apply a technique called “The rule of thirds”. This method is done by dividing your frames into three sections (tic-tac-toe grid) and places your subject at one of these intersecting points. It can help you create a dynamic photo.

Tip # 6

Use the natural morning or afternoon lights so that you will have intimate and natural looking photos

Just try to have fun with your kids. Take it as a time to bond and play. Pick up your camera when everybody is happy. The most important thing is capture the moment that depict worthy memories.

Photography, is it really an art?

September 24th, 2007

I was strolling in the mall one day. I passed by a photo shop looking for some new batteries for my digital camera. I heard an old woman made a comment on a photo hanging. “I like the photo but I would have bought it if were a painting”

A lot of people share her opinion but others continue to recognize the fact that photography is an art. As we all know there are three components of art – artist, medium and artwork. How about combining photography and art? — Photographic art

There are lots of definitions of photographic art. It means different things to different people. Basically it is creating beautiful images and interpreting the scene captured on the film. It’s not only about pointing and clicking… timing is also the key. Patience as you wait for the perfect moment. Take also into consideration lighting, weather and other elements. Of course there are uncertainties and challenges that can make the photographer be creative thus making them passionate on what they are doing.  A photographer is considered as an artist because he/she will capture an image that pleases his/her eyes. Actually a photographer can create something that is close to his/her heart thus giving their identity in the image.

Some photographer prints their work and signs it. It is like buying a painting. You are buying the reputation of the photographer. When someone is starting out and building reputation then you are investing in the potential of that person. Contemporary photography is affordable art.

Subject doesn’t really matter as long as you capture image for your own satisfaction. Consider experimenting and searching for new subject. Remember like an art, photography keeps on evolving.

Remember that the language of an image is subjective.  It is the heart and hand of the author behind the brush, camera or pen that executes the creative vision not the tools used.
